Awards Night 2011

This was a very big night for Fermoy Scout Group and was supported by the top people in Scouting Ireland, the Chief Scout, the Mayor of Fermoy, commissioners and special guests,  all of whom we thank most sincerely for taking time out of their busy schedules to attend.  The stars of the night and those who shone the brightest were the young members of ScoutingFermoy.  Scouts, Ventures and Rovers left their inhibitions and shyness at the door and delivered a very professional awards night ceremony, which included  investitures, ICU certification, bronze Gaisce, the Chief Scout commendation award, and the ultimate achievement for any scout -- the Chief Scout Award itself.  All of our youth members either presented with speeches or received with an understated confidence which supports the belief  in Fermoy that scouting has a very positive influence on our youth.

First up were Anna Clancy and Aaron O’ Sullivan who invested the new scouts.  Both scouts spoke highly of them and a bright future for scouting in Fermoy.  Then Eolann Sheehan entertained us with his oration and invested the ventures.  The next part of the event was to invest our new Rovers.  The chief scout assisted by our group leader did the honours.  Section three was especially dedicated to three of our leader team who over the last number of years have moved on to other projects.  Siobhan Enright, Jillian Byrns and Siobhan Beirne who between them have given over a quarter of a century of faithful service to Fermoy Scout Group saw many a seven year old mature into adulthood.  Our group leader spoke warmly of their voluntary work and wished them well on their new paths.  Everyone at ScoutingFermoy thanks you for the large amount of time afforded to us.  What you brought to the table will make it easier for those who come after you.  A special presentation was made on the night to mark the occasion.

Conor O’Gueran, Donal Clancy and Hugh Verling were on hand to present ICU canoe certs to the level 2 recipients.  The Mayor of Fermoy Mr. Michael Hanley was then called on to present three bronze Gaisce awards.  Before this he congratulated Fermoy Scout Group on their voluntary work and especially the younger members who had spoken so eloquently about their relevant sections on the night.  The Chief Scout of Ireland Michael John Shinnick had a special Chief Scout commendation award to present to Sean Joyce. Sean was nominated earlier in the year as worthy recipient for this award.

Then it was time for the final part of the night’s proceedings.  The Chief Scout was invited to present the top award in scouts to Brian O’Manony, who had put together a very large career study of Physics.  The Chief was so impressed with his work that he said that Brian’s project was a must read for anyone interested in this field.

The MC for the event Dave Bartley then brought the proceedings to a close and refreshments were served. Our thanks go to everyone who made this event a very enjoyable experience.Well done to all the recipients and to Padraig Barry and Chris Dewhurst for photography and a special thanks to Michelle and Theresa for the catering and flowers.
